UT Dallas Students Participate in EWoW at OIT
This past spring break, March 13 – 17, 2023, OIT hosted the EWoW program produced by University of Texas at Dallas Career Services. The Explore the World of Work (EWoW) Program provided students with professional networking and job shadowing experiences in their chosen career fields. Students had the opportunity to network with and shadow employers in their desired career field through informational interviews, informative company presentations, and working alongside employees on different projects.
“I got to know about the program through my Outlook email,” Masters in Marketing student Siri said. “I applied for it and I got in. It was really enlightening. I got to know about a lot of things that I wouldn’t get to know about unless I contacted the OIT department. Unless I faced the situation, I don’t think I would know about [services like] the IT Support Desk.”
The students were from JSOM and had backgrounds in both marketing and information technology. They were enthusiastic about our services, how we operate in the University, and absorbed a lot of valuable information regarding a full-time career. We covered topics such as our social media strategy plan, outreach communications, M365 tickets, and HelpDesk operations. The students were able to learn more about how we operate at the University level, including the different roles that are involved in running a HelpDesk department. They were also able to experience first-hand how important it is for us to keep up with new technologies and make sure the campus community is satisfied with what we provide them every day!
“I was very excited to be a part of [the EWoW program],” Masters in Information Technology student Aryan said. “Throughout my journey, I learned a lot of new things. It acts like a behind-the-scenes for OIT. [It was] really informative. I was really excited for it, and it was awesome.”
The EWoW program was designed to help students gain an understanding of what it is like to work at a university in the Information Technology field. We believe that this program will help prepare them for their future careers by giving them hands-on experience with some of the key functions of a university’s IT department. The EWoW Program allows students to develop skills needed for success in their future careers through real-world experience before entering the workforce after graduation.
“It was a really exciting journey throughout the program,” Masters in Marketing and MBA student Nikhita said. “I got to know a couple of things, more specifically about the Microsoft Ambassador Program and the various tools that Microsoft has. I was especially intrigued with Power BI; I’m looking forward to using it.”
It was great to be able to meet these students and gain insight into the technology needs of the student body. OIT really enjoyed getting to know them and learning more about what they are studying at UTD as well as their plans for after graduation. We look forward to seeing where these relationships go from here!
