Version History and Restoring Documents in OneDrive

Purpose

This article covers the basics of restoring previous versions of other files and viewing your version history in OneDrive. The sections covered below are:

View Version History in OneDrive

You can view the version history of Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel workbooks in their respective applications.

  • Login to OneDrive.
  • Select Show Actions (...) or right-click on the File you would like to see the version history for.
  • At the bottom of the drop-down menu, select Version History.

  • A menu will appear in the left pane with the previous versions of the selected document.

  • Select Show Actions (...) or right-click on the version you would like to restore.
  • Click on Restore.

  • If you see a confirmation message, select OK.
  • The version you restored will become the current version in the list.

Restore Deleted Files or Folders

OneDrive Website

Note: Files are recoverable in OneDrive for up to 30 days. After this time, they are not recoverable by UTD or Microsoft.
  • Login to OneDrive
  • In the panel on the left side of the screen, select Recycle Bin.

  • Select the File you would like to restore and select Restore from the top banner.
    • You can also right-click the file and select Restore.

OneDrive Computer

If you deleted the files or folders from your OneDrive, check your Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac) to see if your files are there.

Note: Deleted online-only files will not appear in your computer's Recycle Bin or Trash.

Windows

  • To restore files from your Recycle Bin in Windows, open the Recycle Bin, select the files or folders you want to recover, then right-click them and select Restore.

  • The file or folder will be restored to its original folder.

Mac

  • To restore files from your Trash on a Mac, open the Trash, select the files or folders you want to recover, then right-click them and select Put back.
