Cloud Center of Excellence

OIT Cloud Services

The Cloud Services team at UT Dallas provides advanced public cloud computing solutions, enabling on-demand access to computing power, database storage, applications, and other IT resources. These services are delivered via the internet, leveraging flexible pricing models such as pay-as-you-go, reserved instances, and savings plans. Our goal is to empower innovation and efficiency across the university’s departments and research initiatives.

Why Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing offers seamless access to servers, storage, databases, and a wide range of application services over the internet. UT Dallas primarily utilizes Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its cloud infrastructure. We also offer Azure services. These platforms support different support different delivery models for cloud services, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Our Cloud Platforms

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

UT Dallas has partnered with AWS to deliver robust cloud solutions. Through the UT Dallas AWS Organizations account, we provide:

  • Centralized management of member accounts.
  • AWS Landing Zone configuration for streamlined deployments.
  • Secure Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) buckets and pipelines.
  • Account configuration Stack Sets for automated resource provisioning.
  • AWS Organizations Service Control Policies (SCPs) to enforce security and compliance.
  • AWS Single Sign-On (SSO) with DUO (MFA) integration for secure access.

Our partnership leverages:

  • Texas DIR contracts to ensure cost efficiency.
  • AWS Data Egress Waiver to minimize data transfer costs.
  • AWS Business Associate Addendum (BAA) to ensure compliance with data security standards.

AWS enables UT Dallas to provide shared services across campus departments and support cutting-edge research, driving global impact through innovation.

Microsoft Azure

The UT Dallas Azure Subscription is another integral part of our cloud ecosystem, offering a scalable platform for diverse academic and administrative needs. Azure services are delivered under Texas DIR contracts and include a Business Associate Addendum (BAA) for data security and compliance.

Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

Any request submitted for GCP resources will be processed on an “as-is” basis. In other words, researchers and users requesting these resources will do so at their own risk. OIT is not responsible for providing technical support, troubleshooting, or maintenance services for GCP-based deployments.

Note: In addition to reduced OIT support for GCP deployments, users and departments remain responsible for the entire cost of services and support incurred by their deployment.

Types of Cloud Computing Services

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS provides the essential building blocks for cloud IT, offering access to networking features, virtual or dedicated hardware, and data storage. It delivers the highest level of flexibility and control over IT resources, ideal for teams requiring customizable infrastructure solutions.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS eliminates the complexities of managing underlying infrastructure, such as hardware and operating systems. This allows users to focus on deploying and managing applications, enhancing efficiency through reduced operational overhead.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS delivers fully managed software solutions, enabling end-users to utilize applications without the need to manage infrastructure or software maintenance. Examples include web-based email and collaborative tools that streamline workflows and enhance productivity.
